Combatting Nutrient Overload

Credit: K.E. HeersWWF-Germany has compiled an overview of nitrogen sources, inputs and fluxes in the North Sea catchment area. Based on these data specific recommendations were presented to decision makers and stakeholders in order to reduce nitrogen releases to the marine environment. Through model projects in regions near the northern German coast, sustainable land use and organic farming is being promoted and it will be demonstrated that in the long term the marine environment will benefit from minimising the amount of fertiliser used. WWF-United Kingdom has produced an inventory of eutrophication problems in coastal waters in order to underpin the need for an overall reduction of nutrient reduction at source.
