Integrated Coastal Zone Management

Credit: P. ProkoschThe sensitive transition zone between land and sea supports key functions in the environment, as fish nurseries for example, and is of vital importance for the livelihood of local communities. The highly dynamic ecosystems along the North-East Atlantic coast have been influenced by traditional uses for more than a thousand years. However, as tourism, agriculture, fishing and the transport industries grow new impacts come to the fore. There is a need to apply environmental impact assessments and cross-sectoral planning and to involve local communities and stakeholders with regard to all coastal activities. These include coastal fisheries, shipping, recreation, flood defence, harbour construction and industrial development. WWF's goal is for an operational framework of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) for the North Sea to be established and the approach promoted throughout the North-East Atlantic.
