Close the deep - warns WWF

Brussels / December 2005 - Deepwater shark stocks are collapsing because of European fisheries, warns WWF. As coastal fisheries have overexploited fish stocks, fishing fleets are scrambling to exploit species in deeper waters in the North-ast Atlantic and around the Azores. But deep-sea fish stocks are extremely sensitive to any fishing pressure, as they are slow growing and take many years to reach maturity. More

WWF calls on EU Fisheries Ministers meeting in Brussels on December 20-21 to close all deep-sea fisheries in Europe’s waters. On December 20, Fish Representatives will be outside the Council building to distribute the Fish Voice, a newspaper from a fish point of view modeled on the European Voice.
